Post subject:  Compression software and DVD authoring software

A friend has a load of audio CDs that he wants to backup to DVD

So he will need:

  • A batch transcoder and
  • DVD authoring software

They need to run in XP and must be free

What do you recommend?

Does he have any opinions on what format he'd like the files stored in? ie closed / open, lossless / lossy etc

He's not a techno bod so I assume he'd rather have MP3s although it'd be nice if it could manage other formats as well

Shame he isn't on Win7. It comes with a very good DVD writer built in.

For burning DVDs try http://cdburnerxp.se/

For ripping to mp3, there's no end of choice. I'm not sure what you mean by "batch converter", but most media software will take a CD, look it up and rip it to mp3 in a suitable format arranged in folders by artist and album. Windows Media Player is the obvious example, or *spit* itunes if they're so inclined.

i use a piece of software called dBpoweramp to rip CDs. It also contains a batch transcoding program, which i have never used, but seems relatively simple to use.

as for DVD burning - i dont think theres anything imgBurn cant do with optical media :D
