The only thing worth bothering with is an X2 of some kind. That's IF you can find a 2nd hand one somewhere! I went from a 3000+ Venice to a X2 3800+ Toledo. Just as they went obsolete, I caught one of the last brand new retail ones for £40! Decent improvement and overclocks to 2.2ghz without a problem. My Dad's in the same boat as you, running a San Diego 4000+. Unless you get lucky on eBay (and tbh I'm not sure about buying 2nd CPUs on there, but maybe that's just me) you're screwed. Sorry. |

Have a look at the BBBB (x404 special). The mobo and Intel E5200 are cheap and a very mild overclock to 3GHz will keep you happy for ages. I bought the E5200 for my brother as a Celeron upgrade (general use PC) with a cheap Abit board and the speed increase for the money spent was amazing. |

I did have a quick look on eBay and there are a few X2s on there. If you're brave enough to spend a few quid, it will make a difference. What do you use the machine for? |

As well as ebay i'd check classifieds from sites that allow trading... For example a thread i noted over at Hexus: clicky. The guy wants £55 for his X2 4400+ inc. del. which isn't bad at all imo, although i haven't checked ebay prices... last time i checked to get my Opteron 165 it was about the same price. I'm sure he's also open to offers too ![]() |

No need to verify, that's a great price ![]() |

Realistically yes. Though second hand s939 X2's are available on ebay, a cheap new MD, CPU and RAM would be advisable. Even something cheap like a Pentium E5200 would be much more powerful, overclockable and power efficient than an old 90nm Athlon X2. |

But will cost significantly more than £50! In fact, you're looking at an absolute minimum £200, not to mention probable re-installation of OS. |

Yes, but some of the 64 X2's did fit in a socket 939 board - I just don't know which off-hand ![]() |

Those would be called the socket 939 64 X2's. Not the socket AM2 CPU you linked to ![]() |

Yes, but many a board has been known to have new firmware applied to it - I'm not claiming to be an expert here ![]() |

I'm not sure if there's any physical difference between the chips, but I would have thought that an AM2 processor is incapable of sitting in a 939 socket? |
