Good news...maybe it'll remove the one trump-card that Windows has.

Coming in April apparently.

Eager gamers have no doubt already seen the teasers, but Valve has now finally confirmed that its Steam game distribution service and Source engine will at long last be headed to the Mac. According to Valve, the company's current line-up of games (including the Half-Life and Left 4 Dead series) will be available to Mac users in April, while Portal 2 will represent the company's first simultaneous release for PC and Mac later this year. Better still, Steamworks for Mac also boasts a new feature called "Steam Play," which will let you buy a game once and, for instance, start playing it on a PC at work and then pick up where you left off on your Mac at home (we'll give you a moment to let that sink in). Game publishers will have to enable that feature themselves, but Valve says it expects most to take advantage of it.

It's a better deal than i was expecting frankly. I though Steam would probably launch purely with existing Mac ports and tat it would remain a distinct service. Porting all of Valve's major games, allowing PC and Mac users to play together and initiating a 'buy once, play anywhere' policy is surely more than anyone could have reasonably expected.

It is the developers live Valve that show up every other developer as money-grabbing mercenary bastards.

On the PC, Steam is a godsend and it'll help grease the wheels with PC to Mac switchers. Lets hope the other 3rd parties that use Steam also supply Mac versions.

I'm sure ID/Activision will.

TBH following this announcement I am now seriously considering replacing my PC with a Mac.

Am I also right in thinking that EA now release their games on Mac and PC on the same release date??

I think that might have been their intention, but I don't know how true it is. I know the Sims 3, Spore etc both came with Cider (Wine basically) for Mac compatibility, but I don't think they were native versions.

By the sounds of it, Half Life 2 etc will be native versions and according to Appleinsider, Dice have been inspired and are looking to bring Bad Company 2 to the mac...

Thank the lord. The difference between a good port and one that's just been pushed through is what gave some of the Mac games a bad name.

The article I've read recently suggests that the Source engine can push out binaries in both Windows and OSX flavours at the same time, enabling dual-releases.
