"Circulating today is yet another rumor... that the Mac Pro will receive a processor overhaul of colossal proportions extremely soon [Tuesday, March 16]," Kelly Hodgkins reports for The Boy Genius Report.

"According to anonymous sources, the upcoming Mac Pro will rock the recently announced Intel Core i7-980x processor which will clock in at a fast 3.33GHz with TurboBoost to 3.6GHz and feature 6 cores and 12 threads of processing power, a 32nm architecture, Socket LGA1366 and 130W TDP," Hodgkins reports.

I wonder if iMacs might get a boost as well?

The iMacs have just had a boost.

The Mac Pro could be receiving the 6 core (with hyperthreading, so 12 virtual cores per processor) Xeons which were launched last year (the desktop part arrived as an Extreme Edition last week).

More importantly, the iMac uses the mobile Core i5/i7 chips, but the MacBook Pro line hasn't been upgraded and is looking decidedly dated against the likes of Acer, Asus, Sony, Toshbia etc. I'm hoping therefore, that the MBPs will get the same sort of processor options as the iMacs currently have.

Edit: I think it more likely that the Mac Pro will get the Xeon part, as opposed to the Core i7 part, as that would mean a change of motherboard and also mean that the Mac Pro could also no longer benefit from multiple physical processors in the machine.

Thanks for that. I can't seem to remember when these things happen. Mactactic.com seem out of date.

I fear it may have blue lights under it as well.

IIRC the iMac actually does use the desktop Core i5/i7 part unless Apple has managed to get hold of a mobile i7 chip that does 2.8GHz standard.
The fastest mobile i7 chip (in terms of clock speed) listed by Intel is the i7-620M at 2.66GHz.

Anyway, getting back to the Mac Pro, I doubt well see one using an i7 processor. It'll be the Xeon equivalent, either one 3500 or two 5500 (or their successors) series chips.

Interesting, I thought they were still using the mobile parts in the iMac...

Anyway, given that we are getting Toshibas in at work with Core i5 chips for throw-away prices and Core i7 for around 1000€, the Core 2 processors in the MBPs are looking rather dated. :(

No argument there. Aple certainly need to bring out i3/i5/i7 MacBook Pros fairly soon just to keep up.

Well, looks like Intel have officially announced the Xeon 5600 series. I'm not convinced by their video though.

So, I expect well see new Mac Pros fairly soon.
