Here's a strange one. Black macbook with Draft N wireless. With the macbook on my desk I get a 160Mb connection, if I leave it where it is and bootcamp in to Vista I get a 300Mb connection. Is Apple restricting me as I'm using a Belkin Draft N Vision instead of an airport.

Apple has been well known for throttling USB2 on the Mac OS, basically to make FW400 look good. It's only since they dropped FireWire on the latest MacBooks that they've unleashed it to the full spec speed. So, I don't think it's strange at all. Just one of the reasons why I prefer FireWire for external drives on my MacBook Pro.

The early MacBook with 'N' spec were not enabled as they were not advertised as having it when sold. Have you tried purchasing the enabler from the Apple store? http://store.apple.com/uk/product/D4141 ... MzE2OTkzMQ

Can't purchase it as it's already enabled (hence the 160MB instead of 45MB)

Sounds like an outdated driver. Draft-N is a moving target. If the Belkin router is much newer, then it could be that it uses newer features to increase performance, but you will need newer drivers. My guess would be that the newer drivers are available for Windows, but the OS X side either haven't been updated or are tuned to work better with their own router (like you say). It is a shame. Like Heather said, the USB2 problem is just as bad! I couldn't believe it, when my aging AMD desktop machine got over 3 times the throughput of my spanking new iMac! That was a real disappointment.

It is funny that you never mentioned this before Dave.

I'm using the Apple supplied drivers for both. methinks they want me to buy an airport extreme (turbo, to the max) or whatever they want to call that white boxy thing (that looks like the other white boxy thing).

Are all system and firmware updates current?
I seem to recall a firmware update to wireless networking a while back.

You won't be the first. It's surprising how often Apple misses the mark.
