Post subject:  PC not Registering all Installed RAM

Lo peeps, first time posting in this forum so be gentle. (8+)

My work PC isn't registering all of it's installed RAM.
I upgraded to 4GB the other day but it's only registering 3.25GB.
Is this a limitation of WinXP, or is it something more than that?
The machine I'm using is a Dell Optiplex GX 755 with an Intel vPro processor running at 2.66Ghz.
Is there anything I can do to get the machine to recognise the full 4GB installed RAM?

Its a limitation of 32 bit operating systems. I think that PC supports 8 maximum but you can only get over 3.2 or so with a 64bit operating system like Vista 64 which most people here seem to be using.

Like monkey boy over me said, it's a problem with x86 Operating systems, they're limited to 3.25Gb of RAM, sucks eh? Only way you'll get the full 4Gb is to upgrade to an x64 OS, but x64 XP is (from what I've heard) shocking for driver support, Vista x64 is the only way for the full 4Gb, or Win7 x64 for that fact...

Yuppo. 2^32 bit address buses are theoretically adequate for mapping 4GB of RAM (Just!), but that doesn't account for the system needing some addresses for other bits of the computer (RAM on a graphics card, various other little hidden bits here and there that you'll never see), so the sneaky computer uses the top chunk of addresses for these.

Wouldn't that mean it's the system taking the memory, not the Operating System?

Well... yes it would, because my Asus PCH-DL reports 3.something Gig in the BIOS despite having 4 Gig installed.
