I need some ideas on some free software that will very simply re-size pictures (photos etc). This is for my elderly but fairly computer savvy mum, so it has to be easy to use without too much adjustments to get the desired results (I can't be there to guide her through it in depth as she lives about 120 miles from me). Any solutions will be gratefully received. |

XP has very simple resizing built in. When previewing an image, right-click and choose "resize". Alternatively, when looking at a folder full of pictures you have the tools on the left. If you click "email this picture" it offers to resize it first. You only have 4 options from 240x320 up to 1024x768 but maybe that's enough? |

I use "The Gimp". It can do much more, but it is great for resizing or changing formats. |

I'd go for the GIMP too. However, it might strike someone who hasn't seen it before as a bit intimidating - it's actually rather user friendly though. If you wanted to pay, I'd suggest Photoshop Elements but I really think she'd be OK with the GIMP. |

+1 for this. Go to google and type "Windows XP power toys" it's called image resizer. BTW, there is also a custom size that you can type in yourself and it will also do batch updates, i.e. highlight a load of images right click and resize. |

The GIMP, it's both powerful and free. |

Yes, but even I struggle to work out how to resize an image using it. I doubt his mother is going to get along with it. |

I have a relatively PC savy mum and I would not dream of letting the Gimp loose on her. Seriously. It's just so... unnecessary! My mum can handle Elements, but even for that she has a crib-sheet. For email and printing, she just uses the XP things that were designed especially for her by the nice people at Microsoft. |

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I've gone with the power toys option as its very easy for her to use. She's all ready tried it this morning with success (I've just got off the phone with her) and it covers all the bases she wants. I personally use picasa. I also have to find my digital camera which has been awol since February. I know its at home someplace but I'll be buggered if I know where ![]() ![]() |
