Post subject:  Connecting cable router to ADSL modem... HELP!

I'm at a loss as to what I need to do here so thought I would ask

I have a Zyxel P-600 series modem connected to a Linksys WRT160N

The router was previously using DD-WRT but now as it's the standard router in the house I put the regular firmware back on.

I have set up the modem using the wizard, hooked it up to the router

It works fine for a couple of minutes then the connection to the internet cuts out, comes back a couple of minutes later.

I'm not entirely sure what I need for the settings to get it to work. I can use it fine (as I am right now) connected to it with an ethernet cable, but when it's in the router things go pear shaped.

I've enclosed screenies of the settings page in the hope someone can point out what I need to change

I have set the router set up as it is by default but will try it again with the modem now set up (hopefully properly)

Not the sort of thing I want to deal with the week leading to my dissertation deadline :(

You say it cuts out. Can you provide more detail? Does the modem actually drop, as in the DSL light goes out?

One thing I'd say; I expect the Linksys router in default is doing NAT and so is the modem. That is, the modem isn't being a modem - it's being a router. I'd turn NAT off on the modem and let the Linksys do the routing.

Although double-NAT shouldn't cause the connection to drop, it does add an extra layer of complication. For example, you have to ensure the intermediate IP address range (192.168.1.x) does not clash with that of the Linksys. It also buggers up PnP, makes port-forwarding overly complicated and can mess up your MTU.

What's the LAN IP of the Linksys? Do make sure it's not 192.168.1.x the same as the modem. Even if you turn NAT off on the modem, you might still want to talk to it.

Everything gets signed out, I'm not sure if it's the DSL/internet lights going out or not (typically it never does it when I'm there)

LAN IP of the router is 192.168.0.1 LAN IP of the modem is 192.168.1.1

Will turn Modem NAT off and see how that works, EDIT: seemed I lost my IP when I turned it off :(

You want the modem to work as a transparent bridge rather than in routing mode. I don't know if there's some other setting I can't see on there, but with a PC plugged directly into the modem I'd expect you to pick up a WAN IP address like 79.68.249.20

If you want to talk directly to the modem without the router, you'll probably have to set a manual IP of something like 192.168.1.2 mask 255.255.255.0

With the modem plugged into the router like that and you plugged into the router, the router should pick up the WAN address like 79.68.249.20 and you'll pick up an address on the 192.168.0.x range. The router then does all the routing, and you should be on line.

Does this firmware keep any logs?

I know DD-WRT does - if the default does too, then you could look in there for any clues.

There is nothing, I had a check when I tried it again with DD-WRT early this morning, i'll switch it back again I think, it works going modemrouter/router as normal but not mode-router which seems weird
