Am I missing something? Spell it out for an idiot please.

Onboard AC97 audio on an Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe optical out to my Yammy amp. I thought I could just play a DVD and whatever was on the disk could be decoded by my amp, just like from my BD player. What obvious thing am I missing??

IIRC you need a software decoder on your PC to read the DD/DTS on the disk then send it to the amp (Cyberlink Power DVD or similar)

K, so nothing freeware? Codec pack or something?

Does the same apply to x264 mkvs?

you need a linear pcm stream to send via toslink, so you will need to find a way to transmit that either via your soundcard or your dvd player software.

Fixed it.

AC3Filter. Lovely little codec and x64 support too. My amp picks it straight up. Happy days.
