Sounds silly and I'm sure I rectified this problem easily last time.

Formatted HDD and reinstalled stuff a few weeks ago. Installed WMP11 - needed codecs to play most of my files. Installed the same codecs as before (ACE, K-lite and Nimo).

Now I can watch mpg but they're upside down. If I turn off acceleration, it plays the rightway up but there's green and purple lines all over the video and it's in poorer quality.

Any help?

EDIT: VLC player plays the file but in the same poor quality as WMP11 sans acceleration. With acceleration WMP11 has perfect quality, but just upside down.

Have you tried standing on your head?

Ok, seriously...

I tried googling "windows media player upside down video" without the quotes, but as I'm at work and have limited internet access I can't really be searching. There were loads of hits though, and I'm sure the answer will be in the top link or two.

Let us know how you get on.

Already googled and went through the first five pages or so.

Most tell you turn off the hardware acceleration. As mentioned, the video is the right way up but the quality is worse and there are purple and green (and yellow) stripes and blotches everywhere. Barely watchable.

Any better ideas?

No idea how to fix the problem. However, you could turn the entire desktop orientation upside-down (ctrl+alt+down arrow?) and thus your video will be the right way up!

A couple more questions... what version of Windows is it you're using again?

Is this just one video file that's affected or all of them?

Have you seen this?

Why is my video upside down?

If the video image is upside down, try increasing the video hardware acceleration. There are two video hardware acceleration settings—one in the Player, and one in the Windows operating system. You must change both settings.

To change the setting in the Player, on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Performance tab. Move the Video acceleration slider to Full.

To change the setting in Windows, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click Display, click the Settings tab, click Advanced, and then click the Troubleshoot tab. Move the Hardware acceleration slider to Full.

EDIT: The only other solutions seem to be either use a different player or update/use different codecs.

Both system and wmp hardware accelerators were at full when the issues started. Have turned off either one and both and still have the same kinda problems.

full acceleration = upside down but perfect quality
no acceleration = right way up but crap quality

I'm gonna try uninstalling and reinstalling codecs later tonight (or tomorrow).

If you're using something like ffdshow then it has a flip option. Do you have any icons in the system tray when you play the video?

Personally, I install the CCCP codecs. It comes with Mediaplayer Classic, but they work perfectly with Windows Media Player too:

Can't help you with WMP but this is what I use and it works a treat even on 1080hd rips:

Not familiar with those codecs, but for years now, I've found that CCCP will pay just about anything. Often with things like this, I find it's the codec at fault and not the app. Just a thought.
