Where's it at?

I need good mono quality, colour is a plus, but will rarely be used and almost never for photo quality. Main points are low running costs and reliability. Network has a server and 3 workstations. Networkable would be nice, but atm both the existing printers are just shared through wizards on 7 and XP and over their USB ports.

Not so worried about initial price if it buys reliability and low running costs with quality. Could probably spend up to £300-400.

I rolled one of these out to a client recently kyocera low cry fast, cost per print and very recommended.

Thanks Spreadie. I did have a look through all the A-list stuff, but I can't believe they're talking Kyocera and Lexmark. You can't tell me IT managers across the land are outfitting their offices with those, surely??

I was kinda hoping some of the IT peeps on here could tell me what they use. If it is Kyocera then so be it, I just would've expected HP perhaps....

I was surprised at Lexmark too and PC Pro dont'/can't test for long term reliability. My last company bought a lot of Kyocera machines, mainly as multifunction copiers, but they were very reliable.

Enterprise client used to be all HP, now Xerox. good kit and relatively easy to maintain and run.
The kyocera I put in for another client is ideal for about 10 people and is fast and efficient.

Well we only have 3/4 of us, so I think I'll go with the 2020. I want better than soho or home stuff, but I don't really need enterprise I suppose. Thanks.

We have a number of 1300DNs (Ethernet and duplex) mono lasers. Fast, reliable and cheap to run (works out at around 1c a page for an "ISO Standard test page".

We also have the secondary paper trays. One of them started slipping, our supplier picked it up, sent it to Kyocera Mita and it was back in operation within 3 working days.

Lexmark have always made excellent business printers. The problem is, they have tainted their name in the cheap as chips low-end consumer devices. If you buy a real printer from Lexmark, then you will get a solid, reliable and cheap to run device. If you buy a low-end printer, you get what you pay for.

The Kyoceras are excellent work horses, I think ours chuck out over a thousand pages a week.

We do have a couple of cheap HPs, but they are like cheap Lexmarks - cheap to buy, expensive to run. If you are spending a grand on an HP printer, you will get an excellent device...

The Xerox printers are also very good, with their solid ink technology. Less waste and good results. They also lease them out and charge you black and white costs, if the colour is less than 6% of the total ink used on a page (E.g. printing colour logos and the rest is B&W).

In my experience cheap HP laserjets are just that. Cheap. If you can go further up in the range then theres some good stuff to be had. Most places I've worked have almost exclusively used HP with one or two alternatives thrown in. More recently though Konica Minolta seem to be the flavour of the month but thats because they're replacing 100's of individual printers with a few big boys.

Printers at work are all HP but most are getting on a bit (I've got a LaserJet 4000TN in my office).
The new ones have been a bit hit and miss. As others have said steer clear of the very cheap HP's they break in no time and are very expensive to run.
A sensible entry point in the HP range appears to be the 3000 series. There are a fair few LaserJet P3005's around and they seem to have been a lot better than the bargain basement HP's.

We've got a big Canon photocopier which replaced a Xerox and I'd take the Xerox copier back in a minute. The Canon has been a limping pile of failure since it was installed IMHO. It'll only print reliably on Canon paper for a start (or that's what was blamed for all the paper jams when we had Xerox blu-pack stuff). The walk up interface is awful and it's got some peculiar bugs as well.

My work has an awesome printer system in the office. You register your login with one colour and one B&W laser printer. You tell the PC to print your document. Then you can walk to any printer in the building, swipe your pass key over a scanner and the network will send the file to that particular printer.
No more setting up printers on each PC you log on to. No more having to set up different printers for every model in the building.
It's great.
