I have to replace my system HDD, and I have a separate HDD data disk to be kept safe. I thought I would unmount and then disconnect the data disk (the SATA cable) for safety. Then replace the system disk and install from CD (Ubuntu 10.04), and then reconnect the data disk and mount it. Is this OK? Any traps?
Thanks for any advice.

Sounds okay to me - as long as you use a bog standard mount command.

Code:
mount /dev/hdb1 ~/datadisk

Huh? Is your system disk a hot swap device? Unless it is you'd need to switch off the machine to swap the drive, so why not just power down and then physically remove the data disk?

Of course I would switch off! Sorry I didn't make this clear.
I would leave the data disk in place because I want it to be available under the new installation, and simply unplugging the SATA cable seems simplest. Just trying to ensure it doesn't get wiped during the new installation process!

That's what I thought

One thing to be careful of - make sure your data disk is not on the primary socket. If it is then it *could* mess up the fstab

Well that worked out OK, thanks. No data lost!
I now have Ubuntu 10.04 running and most of it works. I'll raise some questions in another thread.
