I tried to set up vnc connection from my main rig to my server over my home network.

When I initiate connection it will show me the desktop on the server and inputs like mouse and keyboard work too. But I don't get any screen refreshes after that. So all I get is one "photo" rather than continuous stream of updates.

I have added tightvnc to a list of allowable programs on W7's firewall but it didn't help.
Server is running the latest Ubuntu.

Any ideas what am I doing wrong?

I've never used tight vnc myself.

Are you using their server and client? If not, check that the software is compatible - there are a couple of different versions of VNC.

On the server.

System-Preferences-Romote Control then make sure you've ticked "Allow other users to control your desktop" also untick "you must confirm each access to this machine"

Saspro,

Can you confirm that Thightvnc viewer and Ubuntu's inbuilt remote control feature are compatible? I though it was but I suspect Nick might be right that they are not as it is not working properly for me.

I have set it up correctly in Ubuntu, just as you said I should have.

At the moment I am looking into installing Tightvnc server on my server to make sure I am using compatible software at both ends.

I use Tightvnc viewer with ubuntu's inbuilt VNC server & it works fine for me.

I have a password set on mine if that makes a difference.
Viewer running on W7 Ultimate x64

This is what it looks like on the server side:

Did you have to set up port forwarding in any way?

I don't need port forwarding from inside the lan (although I would if I wanted to get in from outside).
I don't have the "Configure network automatically to accept connections" box ticked.

I have experimented a bit with my setup.

I have installed VNCtight server on my laptop and tried to control my laptop from my main rig. It worked flawlessly.
Then I installed VNC tight server under Wine on my server and tried to connect to it from my server and from my laptop. It has connected to server, asked me for a password but after inputting the password it time out on me while trying to connect.

So it seems my network and my main rig are fine. The server side is the problem with both inbuilt remote desktop feature and with Tightvnc under Wine.

Any ideas?

Ok, I installed x11vnc from Ubuntu software center and got it to work. I have a question or two about it but I will ask in Open source section instead.

Thanks guys.
