*Wanders in, nervously*

Hey all, got a Mac question for you!

At work, I've recently started running an FTP server so we can swap images between clients, publishers and the like. A lot of people aren't sure how FTP works, so I tend to send them a link that they can just c'n'p into their start>run dialog (on windows, obviously...). This means they don't need any software to run it, and the process is as transparent as possible.

Obviously, as I found out this morning, that won't work on a Mac! So I was wondering what the equivalent is? Or do you need particular software?

The link I send them is along the lines of
Code:
explorer ftp://{username}:{password}@{ftp server address}

Thanks!

In Finder, go to the "Go" Menu, select "Connect to server".
When the box pops up, insert you spiel into the text field:
ftp://{username}:{password}@{ftp server address}

I know you may not want an application, but something like Cyberduck might be appropriate :)

Perfect, thanks.

I've got an idiots guide set up for connecting to our FTP server, I'll add a Mac section to it and put a link in to cyberduck. That should keep everyone happy! :D

Just confirmed that when you input the address, you do it like this:
ftp://{ftp server address}

Click "Connect" and it will prompt you for a username and password if required :)
You can press the + button next to the input box to save the ftp address (there is a list of saves servers under the input box), users may not like their passwords being on show in plain text :)

Cool. :D

Except it doesn't work. :(

Not sure what the problem is, the guy I've been dealing with can log in but not do anything. Works fine when I try it. *shrug*

Time is of the essence here, so he's sending it via yousendit.com - not much time to muck around!

Actually, if I send you the login details, can you try and log in for me and see if it works?

I can do, but I don't have my Mac here at work with me, I can only test via Solaris which probably won't help.
PM me the details and I can have a play tonight if that is any help?

Bear in mind, for some reason, the finder won't write to FTP, it'll only download. To upload files you need a client. I use Transmit myself.

Don't know about Leopard as I don't have it, but it's always been the case, even on Tiger. Just checked and I can't write on Tiger, are you sure you were able to?

Yes, it's how I used to read and write from my uni file store when I discovered FTP was far quicker than SMB and didn't screw with your formatting...

That's a shame, it pretty much means that any of our clients that use macs can't use our site unless they install software.

If anyone wants to try any other ways around it, just PM me for login details to our server.

Cheers!

The other option is getting them comfortable with using the Terminal.
However - :geek: :ugeek:

I hate to say you're wrong Ben, but you must be mis-remembering! The Finder never has written to FTP (and still doesn't according to this).
