Sounds like a good idea, especially for non-corporates. One of the biggest problems with the Internet today is people running unpatched machines being infected with malware that uses exploits which have been patched months earlier... :?

But I doubt they will be allowed to do it. :(

Dig_D you might know I work for the NHS

Lot of the time is spent between the library and ICT but if the NHS can not turn off updates they will never go for windows 7

becuase if MS put a bad update out it could compleatly crash the NHS network that could cost lives - remember XPSP3 and all these AMD users?

if they firewall it them windows 7 will just turn itself off like vista?

thants the reason behind the queston and the ICT people I work with, when I said I read this are now asking for more information, but working in the library I pulled a blank on likns etc

I know window 7 does not have WGA on it it been replaced with some thing else where I think you can not turn updates off

Corporates / large customers don't use Microsoft's update servers, the bandwidth required would be stupid. They download the patches to a central staging server, where they can roll them out to a group of test machines, and once the testing is complete, they can roll it out to all of their machines.

All their workstations point to their internal update server.

For large organisations, this is a non-issue.

No problems on my AMD machines... Just some OEMs ignoring Microsoft's advice for 3 years... :? But yeah. Hence the above, the NHS should already be using a centralised rollout.

Again, corporates have a licence server. You can firewall it, but it isn't necessary. Vista Enterprise automatically contacts the central authentication server once every few months. It was designed to stop people getting the Enterprise DVD (which doesn't require a separate key number) and using it at home, like they did with XP. The machine needs to be on the network to register the Windows install and needs to be regularly returned to the network for re-authentication (for laptops). If you stick Vista E on your home machine, somebody will probably notice you lugging your gaming rig into the office on a regular basis!

I would suggest that your ICT people get retrained on how to run a Microsoft environment! This is basic stuff that anybody who is planning to manage in a Windows environment should know... :?

Windows will have its own version of version of WGA, but it isn't as aggressive. I think for unregistered machines, it will set a permanent background image, saying that the version of Windows is not authorised...

Whether Windows 7 auto updates or not should be irrelevant for an organisation, especially something the size of the NHS...

 To be honest that is sheer stupidity and the head of ICT should be sacked IMHO. Forget the huge waste of bandwidth the risk to impacts on systems especially corporate applications is enormous. Unbelievable. ( not doubting what you are saying by the way just the stupidity of the actions of the ICT team management )

if I scaned it and then paste it here it would be breach of copy - ie agaist the law

Thus I can not do that

hence the referance to the magazine

It only cost 200 pence to buy or see if your local library has it then it be free to read

The RC candidate has all the same options as XP regarding Windows Update.

A quick Google search did not come up with anything.

disabling services FTW!!

provided of course that this is true, and i really dont see how it can be. i personally have my updates set to "prompt to DL and install", since i dont want my PC installing anything i dont know about

but i suppose after the mess with conficker (had apparently been patched for months before the hole was exploited  ) M$ will take some action to prevent it happening again, i just hope it is not this
