I'm looking at this: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158908/

It's gone up by £15 since I last looked, which is annoying. However, it's still the most pixels I can find for my money.

Any comments or recommendations?

Thanks :)

Not really my cuppa tea as it does have DVI input but reading some of the feedback most people seem pleased with it so if the DVI doesn’t bother you then go for it. I have a Samsung 22" which I'm really pleased with so they made a good product.

Seems a odd combo of resolution and size to me. But you're right, a lot of pixels for your money. I suppose it depends on what you want it for and if DPI is your primary buying motivation.

I had a more conventional 24" 1920x1200 Acer before, and loved the extra space. Unfortunately it wasn't very good, and then broke down completely. It's taken 6 months, but I finally have my money back.

In the mean time I've been back on my 19" 1280x1024 Dell. I really do miss the desk space, and now I've got the cash back I'm upgrading again. But I'm not buying another Acer, and Samsung do generally have a good reputation.

Lack of DVI is a non-issue for me, since my desktop has Intel 82945G with VGA only.

The higher DPI should look good. My 19" is like Lego Vision at the moment

My primary concerns are;

  • It's a TN panel, or so people say. I don't know what that means but "they" don't seem to think it's a "good" thing. My Acer had terrible colour outside about 1 degree viewing angle, so I'm hoping that's not the same.
  • Does anyone know of a better screen for under £200?
  • I'm not 100% certain my gfx will support it. It does state 2048x1536 as the maximum, but 2048x1152 is not listed when I try to select. However; the Intel website basically says that it won't unless you have a PnP monitor plugged in.

a) Some people seem to hate it with a passion, i guess it's one of those things that ifyou haven't seen it before you won't really notice that much. PVA or IPS panels are supposed to offer more faithful and better colour reproduction but i've never really complained about the colours of my TFT tbh (a Dell 19"... maybe like yours lol). Also viewing angles are reduced however i think it depends on the monitor really... with my Dell i've never noticed anything particularly bad really and generally i'm the one sat in front of it so to me it doesn't that much as long as it's not stupidly narrow.

b) Umm maybe... there's a Dell 22" 1080p monitor in last month's CustomPC that didn't get a "bad" review as such, just complaints that it was a TN panel (but an alright one at that). I'd look around to more in my head but have an exam in 2 hours and still need to revise :(.

c) Yeah it should be fine, currently the graphics processor card is scaling up to your current monitor aspect ratio which is why it's not showing the right resolution however since the resolution is within the processors limits it should be alright.

You won't get anything better than a TN panel for less than £200. So that's the end of that.

I had a Samsung 20 @ 1680 x 1050 for work a year ago and it was very, very good. Recommended. Rich colours and decent blacks. Handled 720p DivX very nicely indeed.

After a quick search, the model you selected seems well specced for the cash and among the best. I'm certain an PVA panel is the only way to "significantly" better anything sub-£200, so why not. Certainly, I'll vouch for Samsung.

I have one of these http://www.oyyy.co.uk/product.php/70025/edge10-w243h-24-inch-widescreen-monitor-wuxga+-tft-lcd-1000:1-500cdm2-1920-x-1200-8ms-dvi--black-?CAWELAID=243007791.

Having looked around on google shopping they seem to be coming back into stock in about a week. These monitors have amazing stands, DVI and analogue inputs, and whilst the TN screen isn't great, you don't get £200 PVA panels anymore; my work place has 6 of the 24" DGM PVA monitors from a couple of years ago that cost about £200-215 each. How I wish I could still get my hands on those screens!

That does look good, but I can't wait - need delivery next week while I'm here to sign for it. Also, I kinda just want to see what 2048 pixels looks like :D

Thanks for your input guys. I've just placed the order.

Annoyingly, I first looked at this monitor 2 months ago and it was £130 free delivery. I didn't have my money back from Acer though, so I couldn't get it yet.

Yesterday, it was £140 + £7 delivery from Dabs

They've just put the price up, so I'm paying £150 from eBuyer :?

I bet it's down to 99p in a few weeks

It's on my desk, and initial impression is very favourable. The contrast ratio is staggering; I never realised just how un-black my blacks were before. It's like anti-Persil!

Horizontal viewing angles are acceptable, but the vertical is very poor. If I stand up now, the entire screen turns blue. For a true white, the angle is less than one degree verticle. I basically have to hold my head to within 5mm of the centre line, which sucks. My Acer was exactly the same, so I guess it's normal for cheap panels. Useless for serious photo work, but fine for non-graphic stuff.

Also, it's wide. Reeeeeeeally wide. I know that is obvious, but it almost feels like it's wrapped around you. I think it matches your eye's natural ratio better, and when watching wide-screen video the screen looks more stylish not having the black borders. I do watch a lot of full-screen video; and a quick test thankfully shows that my on-board graphics can up-scale to this resolution without a problem.

One rather surprising benefit is it uses only 44Watts. It doesn't get anywhere near as warm as my old Acer , or even my 19" Dell. The energy saving adds up to over £200 in 3 years, so you could say it'll pay for itself.
