Is it possible to retrospectively upgrade a MacBook Pro CPU? I've seen websites which say it's soldered in and other which say it isn't. ATM I've got a Late 2007 2.4GHz C2D MacBook Pro if it is possible to upgrade then which socket CPU would I be looking for and what speed processor would it be able to cope with given the power consumption and heat etc... |

When I was looking at upgrading my MacBook, a lot of sites were talking about the MacBook Pro, and they all seemed to suggest it was soldered in, the few that didn't say it was, didn't say it wasn't either.... If you do replace it, I'd love to know how it goes, as I'd really like to upgrade mine from a CD to a C2D... |

If you can (and I'm not sure about this), it won't be worth it due to the price of laptop CPUs. It's probably not too easy to get in to a Macbook Pro that far either. If you like, I'll have a look and see if I can find you some more resources but I really don't think this is a good idea. |

It should be fairly easy to get to the CPU, just a little difficult to chip it off the logic board ![]() The iBook was really easy to get into, if you don't mind the sound of cracking plastic (it didn't break, but the sound suggested it had) |

I've bought a new HDD for it anyway so I think I'll have a looksy at what's going on when I open it to put the new HDD in. |

Well I changed the HDD and memory today and I need to take the keyboard and plate off to get to the HDD. I had a quick look round the mobo and the processor is most definitely soldered to the board. Shame, would have been good to stick something a bit faster in. |

£300 for a 10% overall improvement? Yes it would be nice; but you wouldn't even notice the difference after a week ![]() |

The slow bits on those Macbook Pro's are the hard drives, some were 4200rpm, some were 5400rpm, so if you have changed that and increased the memory, that's all that is worth doing. |

I don't suppose you can unsolder the CPU easily? Or difficultly even...I'd love to upgrade my Core Duo to a Core 2 Duo for the 64-bit goodness.... |

His is a unibody MBP and all you need to do to get to the hard drive is remove the battery cover and pull the plastic tab attached to the drive and it's removed. Mark |

Surely that could never work? It would need a wider bus and probably a different chipset???? |
