So all the fans I can see on sites like Novatech are 12v, but USB only gives 5v.

If I were to power one of these fans using USB, would it just spin slower???

In theory, yes. However if memory serves fans require 7v to get started, even if they can then function on less once they are spinning. Might just require you to manually spin it up to start off with.

What is the fan going to be used for? If it's running from a laptop you could try THIS LINKY

Or try googling USB powered fans ?

I am going to place it on my Time Capsule to help keep it cool - it is seriously hot to touch, and raising it with some makeshift feet hasn't helped much - I want to add a fan to the metal underside, and power it off the Time Capsule's own USB port.

I did look at those sort of options, but they're not really suitable.

Oh, I see...

Wouldn't it be easier to buy/make a 12 volt power supply, or are you trying to run it from USB/5V to reduce cable clutter/noise?

How are you planning to connect the 3-pin motherboard connector to USB? At best it'll come with a 4-pin molex connector which isn't going to help you much.

You may be able to pull bits off one of those laptop coolers and adapt it somehow? Presumably they run from USB..something like this Clicky

Well the three pin is just positive, negative and the third carries a pulse to indicate the RPM so it should be just a simple case of ignoring that cable.

Due to the power cut today I've not been able to go and get either a donor cable or fan.
