Hi all

New to this forum although i was a member on the old CPC forum. Anyhoo I have a problem that i have no idea how to solve.
I was updating my free zone alarm software and the download froze, i left it for 20mins or so but it was still stuck on 44% completed, I tried to cancel to no avail so i closed down my PC. Now when i re boot it gets no further than the configuring updates stage :( .

Any ideas as to what i can do to force it past this screen. Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks
Shanks

Welcome to the forums. We'll let you off the fact you were on the old forums ;)

What operating system are you using?

F8 then enter last know good configuration?

Is it windows that's giving you the updating message? If so leave it for 30 mins or so & it should sort itself out.

PS Welcome to the forums

Thanks for the replies and the welcome guys.

Saspro

The message is from Windows & it is before the log on screen so I cant access anything I can't even open the PC in safe mode as the keyboard is not responsive.

Steve

Thanks for this mate if and when i can get onto my PC i may well consider it, although this is the first time i have had any trouble with zone alarm.

Thanks again guys

How come the keyboard is not responsive?? Is it a USB model on an ancient motherboard or something?

Could you get a PS/2 model?

I've had 30 min delays from major driver or service updates on vista or 7 before. How long have you left it for?
Safe mode should kick in before updates though. Keep hitting f8

Nick
I built it myself with an Asus p5q deluxe mb and the kb is usb but for some reason it won't respond even when I try to access the bios I can't enter the password :-(

Saspro
I have left it running for over an hour and it hasn't budged an inch and push f8 doesn't seem to have any affect.

Thanks again for the replies.

Looks like you'll need to borrow a ps2 kb from somewhere.
You could always put in the dvd & do a repair.

OK connected an old ps2 kb and and the only response i got was that it accepted input from pressing F1 because of the new kb, this took me to the windows error page and asked if i wanted to start in safe mode etc ... unfortunately the arrow keys didn't respond :?: so pc started in normal mode :(

So rebooted pc and kept pressing F8 as suggested and whether by doing this or not i was taken to a screen that ran CHECKDISK so i thought great :) but no after it ran this it took me to the same configuring updates screen :(

So rebooted again and for the first time asked me to place the Vista disk and run repair so i put the disk in and restarted the pc as instructed & when asked to push any key to run from disk, no matter what key i pushed it just started in normal mode

It doesn't seem to matter what kb i use i don't seem to be getting a response from it when i really need it. Any sugestions as to the next step would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for the help & suggestions so far.

Saspro

Right I have now cleared the cmos which has allowed me to get further along.

I restarted the pc in safe mode, ps2 kb works now, and all looked fine so restarted pc in normal mode, I got to the sign on screen entered my password and all I get is a black screen. I have left it like this for about 20-30 mins thinking it was just sorting itself out bit nothing.

I have even tried the disc repair option but each time I restart with the Vista disc it doesn't't seem to recognise that the disc is there.

I know it is probably something really simple that I have missed. I have to admit that I am now way out of my depth now so any more help or suggestions you guys have please fire away.

Thanks again Shanks

Black screen sounds like either the video driver is missing/corrupt or the resolution is too high for the monitor.

In safe mode, try loading the latest version of the video drivers for the chipset in your machine.
