Hey hey, Anyone here know how to use the darned thing? Basically what i'm trying to do is find a way of importing calendar data from a .sdb into iCal server so that people can subscribe to their university timetable but i'm having a bit of trouble figuring it out. Novice here! I think i've worked out that that i've got to import people's user accounts from the University's distribution server (?) so that they can subscribe to calendars from my iCal server. Then it'll simply be a job of locating the correct timetable to subscribe to. What i'm wondering is basic setup. I thought it'd be a lot easier with OSX Server (And i'll readily admit that it's easier than Apple Calendar Server for Linux!) but I keep reading online things about having to set up DNS (Which I thought was sorted out by ISP/University) and Kerberos (What the devil is that?) and Open Directory... All of which don't seem to be in the manual! Anyone have any experience? |

I presume if you've got Kerberos installed it'll have man pages, so open a terminal and type:
Then I'd looksy here, although this looks to assume some knowledge of basic LDAP stuff, although you'll need to know that sort of stuff anyhoo, I'd imagine. |

Kerberos (IIRC) is a security things. You're university will be running either LDAP (UNIX name servers) or Active Directory (Windows name servers, though it is LDAP underneath) to hold a list of users and passwords. You'll need to set up OS X to use that. I'm on Snow Leopard (client) here, so here's what I think I'd need to do to acomplish this: 1) Open system profs 2) Go to Accounts/Users 3) Login Options (may need to unlock the padlock in the lower left corner) 4) Click the "Join..." button next to "Network Account Server" 5) Tap in the address to the name server - Before hitting OK, read on! If the uni is using Active directory, you'll need to do the following too: 6) Open Directory Utility (the button on the sheet that you're on now) 7) Unlock the padlock 8) Enable Active Directory In the Directory Utility, you may need to some stuff in the Search Policy tabs, but I've never done anything like this on OS X, so what I've put above is as much as I can guess... I would also guess that kerberos would possibly need to be linked with the uni? HTH, Ben |

I'm guessing you'll need to have the box registered in DNS so people can find it. Kerberos is an authentication method/protocol Open Directory is LDAP as you'll need to run a query on the birectory to powulate users etc |
