I got it in IE6 as well. Surely they mean that Amazon is optimised for IE8, not t'other way round. |

No this might all be part of the push by Microsoft to get people to abandon IE7 and earlier. Didn't Channel 4 have something similar last week? |

So how does that work then? When you get the browser it comes pre-cached with a load of sites already in it??? |

More likely that Channel 4 and Amazon have configured their site to work with IE8. Don't bash Amazon for wanting users to upgrade to a more secure browser, and the same applies to Microsoft. |

I should point out that I was using Chrome 5 at the time, not IE6, so it looks like general Microsoft advertising rather than a "use a more secure browser" effort. |

Optimising for IE8 isn't really acurate, basically, if they drop IE6 and IE7, they can concentrate on producing one version of the site, which will work with all browsers. All current browsers are close enough, in the core HTML/CSS capabilities, that you can generate one site for all browsers. If you have to also support IE6 and IE7, then you have to hack the site to make extra checks for IE6/7 and output custom CSS only for that browser. It means extra testing, a more fragile site and it is a complete pain for the developer. Given that IE6 is no longer supported, doesn't get security fixes and is full of security holes, it isn't a surprise that sittes like Amazon are looking at getting people to move onto a more secure browser... Looking at the site with IE8 or Firefox doesn't show any advertising for a new browser. It looks like they are just encouraging users on unsecure browsers to upgrade... |
