It costs nothing to hit the software update system preference pane. Mark

I have no excuse. I want to keep up when I can. I'm planning Snow Leopard soon.

Of course, being so new means that my internet banking doesn't work any more with Safari.

Rly? If I was you, I'd seriously consider changing banks. If they can't get their web site working properly in all browsers, I wouldn't entirely trust them to keep it secure either. Jon

Well, they've probably got a list of browsers that they'll certify as being secure. Safari 4 was clearly one of them, and until they've sorted themselves out I can always just use Firefox. Not a big hassle, to be honest. I'd prefer that they didn't blindly guarantee the site with any browser, in fact, as I take it to mean that they're sure of the security under certain conditions.

It's trivial to have your browser pose as another, though. You could download Safari 5 and have itself report as Safari 4 if you wanted to carry on using your banking system?

Plonker. I know it is free. I am not that brain damaged. I was trying to give Heather a way out.

At least I am achieving something on one level anyway.

That's OK for me, the recent Chrome update bringing it out of Beta means I can check my bank stuff on there now instead

The absolutely pointless progress bar...yes I know it gives me an indication of how much of the page is still to load, but that information has no value unless set against a time scale so that I know how long it will take for the rest of the page to load. Why do people fall for such pseudo-features? What next? A round of applause for the spinning beach ball which tells me the application may or may not be about to respond?? Lets here it for the little rotating hourglass, another particular favourite which tells me...let me think, it tells me my computer is supposedly doing something..... I feel it's time to start a campaign for the irradication of non-features

Wolfie2,
Pointless? 99% of the time, probably. But if a site appears to hang or loads very slowly, you can still see that it is progressing, so you know that the internet connection is still alive, for example. I can't say it bothers me one way or the other.
Hopefully they will now get a NoScript like add-on, then I'll be happy to switch away from Firefox.

I agree with Wolfie to a degree. As an activity indicator it serves a function but as a progress indicator it's effectively useless since the program actually has no way at any given point to accurately estimate what percentage of the page is loaded. It actually serves no more useful function that the old 'throbber' in the URL bar and I never really saw why people seem to prefer it - it gives you the illusion of information, not actual information. I suppose people prefer to be told something than nothing, even when what they're being told is rubbish. Jon
