can anyone recommend a PAYG 3G dongle that will work in the Lake District (Cockermouth)?

You'll be lucky -back of beyond!
Ask around for which mobiles work best- will give an indication. Probably a lot of dead spots.
I got a voda with 1gig ages ago on a "never expires" deal.costs £15 per gig but at least you get to use it all. many- eg O2 - the credit expires in 30 days. Never used it that far north though.
