is the £800 payment an egg-sperm-i-mental amount or will it change in time?

I agree. If you cant have children naturally then tough. There should be no fertility treatment on the NHS what so ever. if you want it pay for it otherwise lump it.

Now come on guys! Am sure if any of you were reproductively challenged you'd soon be trying all kinds of things. No everyone can afford to go private. If you want to bitch about something then why not plastic surgery on nhs?

I'm sorry Caz, but we are in a situation, where there are already too many humans on the planet and God knows how many orphans. Why should we be trying to help people who can't get children, when there are more than enough to go around.
We need to be looking at ways of keeping the Earth's human population under control and throttling it back (without mass genocide or famine).
Plastic surgery has its place, although I am against purely cosmetic surgery (nose shape changing etc.). For badly deformed noses, where breathing is a problem, it should be done, likewise breast reduction (one of my cousin's wives had a G-cup, after having 2 kids, they lopped a couple of Kg out of each breast and shrunk them down, to reduce her back problems).
Edit: I don't know whether I am reproductively challenged or not, I met my partner when it would be more dangerous for her to have children and at an age, where I would be over 60, by the time they graduate. That was something we decided, we didn't want to go through. I'll probably be getting the snip sometime soon.

Yeah, that too. The NHS - and the country as a whole - is strapped for cash. Plastic surgery to help recover from injury or damage caused by outside factors, I'm okay with. Having a boob job or stapling a stomach because you won't stop shoving the wrong food down your pie hole I'm not okay with. Not delivery offspring for your doting parents/parents-in-law is not a life-threatening health issue. The state-funded health service should not be there to provide support to people unable to get pregnant, in my opinion. For various reasons, I am not able to have children. I've just got on with my life, accepting the cards life dealt me, harsh though they may appear to my parents who no doubt would have loved to have had a sprog or two to look after occasionally. Not everyone needs to give birth. There's plenty of humans out there already, without helping us produce more artificially.

I can sort of understand the reasons why people try everything possible to give birth naturally. I'm not able to have children naturally, but I've opted not to go for IVF because I couldn't take the heartbreak if it didn't take. I've seen many people go through it and in those cases it's been a symptom of their relationship that they *must* have a child that is made up of both of them and born "naturally" in which case I agree that they should pay for it themselves.
I think I've decided that if we decide we'd like to have children then we'll go down the adoption route, it's a little scary but hopefully it means that we'll have a family and not contribute to the current population issues, as well as being a good home for some children who need one.

I agree there's plenty of kids out there that need homes but you're not going to persuade everyone that wants families to adopt. Some women feel the need to give birth and if they are offered a chance on the nhs then why not? I know people who have and have been successful. There are plenty of things this country wastes money on - not just the nhs. I'd rather my well earned money went to help people start a family than waste valuable human life on a war no-one wants. But that's another discussion.

No, the Health Service is there to help people who are ill, not to get them pregnant. They should ban IVF from the NHS full stop, it won't make you ill or kill you if you don't have a kid. There are plenty of kids out there who need homes already, people should be less self centred and adopt rather than wasting NHS money on trying to beat the statistics and reproduce their gene pool. Mother nature is telling them something, deal with it.

People can't have babies if they can't do it naturally?
Load of crap.
Too many humans?
Let's massacre a few then.
Has this place become a haven of Daily Mail style bull [LIFTED]?

I think it's pretty much a Daily Mail attitude to think that you have a right to whatever you want no matter what the cost to everyone else. If you can't have kids then adopt or pay for IVF yourself. That's Mother Nature's opinion, not that of the Daily Mail.

No matter what the cost? it's a measly 800 quid for a child. We have chosen to build a society that allows people to cheat death even if they systematically abuse their bodies their entire life, artificial insemination is as unnatural and justified as giving someone antibiotics to kill an infection.
NO MATTER WHAT THE COST TO OTHERS!!! *gasp chortle*.

The point is the NHS is there to deal with ill health.

The NHS is there to provide treatment when your body isn't working properly.

+1 I really want kids, I've wanted kids for as long as I could remember. If I can't have a child naturally I'd love to be given the chance (as apposed to buying the chance) of having a child, if not then I will adopt. I agree wholeheartedly with what Caz said though.
