But bosses at Essex Police banned PCSOs from lending a hand when they recently discovered what was happening.

The school will now have to find £1,888 each year - £472 to hire two officers for four hours four times a year, which works out at £59 per hour.

I know the school - it’s a church school and the church is on the other side of a very busy road. There is no way you’d want to cross the road at that place.

The head was tailing to the press a lot today. It finally got out via the local paper that the school, which is attached to a church, can't safely get pupils across the road. It's been a problem for a long time for them, so it's good that something is bei done. Shame the Police are having to be embarrassed into it though.

This is the school my other half teaches at.

Do they even have the power to stop traffic?

Yet another reason we should have PCs instead.

As for the school, why aren't they petitioning the LEA to provide a crossing assistant?

I used to have to stop traffic all the time at work.
Unless you're a PC, then all you can do is ask if the drivers don't mind waiting for a short period while you get whatever it is you're doing done.
Apart from the Royal Mail. That's an offence, IIRC.
If you are a PC, then you can indeed stop the traffic. A proper 'signs n everything' road closure is slightly more involved, however.
(Unless you're the small village of Kingston in the South Hams, who shut the roads into the village once a year quite illegally with the help of a fire engine and some stolen road signs.)

They did. It's a very dangerous road, and a crossing assistant would not be appropriate. Near the school the speed limit has been dropped from 60mph to 40. The road has to be closed by the police. It would be illegal, and highly dangerous, for a teacher or a traffic assistant to stop traffic.

The school is also somewhat out of the way from local settlements, so a lolipop man or lady isn't actually needed from day to day.
