CLICKYSo if there was no threat to the plane and passengers, and there was no real extra flight time to Heathrow compared to Stanstead, why on Earth did they divert the plane and cause all that disruption for their passengers?

Less disruption caused by requesting priority for an emergency landing.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

It could have been a complete over reaction by the pilot as to why he called for the diversion and the fighter escort. I do think that the passenger if found guilty should have his passport taken away or marked that he is on a lifetime no fly ban. It would stop the drunks kicking up fuss if they could never fly anywhere again.

I witnessed a rather drunk passenger on an Easyjet flight taken away by security and executed because he called a male flight attendant a "faggot". That was at Schiphol. I remember it quite vividly.

Chances are that the passenger was right about the flight attendant. Though he should never had said it. To be honest getting drunk on a plane is stupid even if the booze is free. I avoid booze when flying. I love flying and do not want to ruin it by getting drunk. I want to enjoy every minute of it.

I have no sympathy for drunk people on planes. They deserve everything they get if they misbehave.

Agreed. Even if it leaves them with permanent no fly bans.

Surely that would be a breach of their human rights.

Not necessarily, they can still catch trains or ferries. Or they could have a ten year ban, by stamping the passport with no fly restrictions.

To avoid using flight paths over London I expect. I doubt there is room within the law for them to make a decision over risk, if anyone says there is a bomb on board, no matter how unlikely it may be, they are required to inform air traffic control and request an emergency landing. What I don't understand is how he came to the decision that it would be a funny thing to say.

Ahh.. That original news article I linked to, never mentioned a bomb threat. I just though he was being rude and abusive (+ maybe drunk).

In which case I suspect that he will get a few years inside for a bomb hoax.
