It's nice to know that even in a corporation that hasn't always done the right ting (understatement of the day), there's someone with a decent moral compass. One of the few bright spots in the whole horrific event is that it seems many people have done exactly the same. There are stories of people being taken in by strangers when their homes were destroyed, people sharing what little food and water they have despite there being none left in the shops and no immediate prospect of resupply. Of course there are also idiots like whoever starts the Malaysian SMS hoax but in general the Japanese people (if not some of their institutions) have shown their best side just when it was most needed. and think if it was USA you'd get looters, robbers and people shooting and knifing each other for supplies, with their "each to their own" mentality

Japan is helped by the fact that crime is rare in Japan, and people are trust worthy, that could not be said in many communities in the UK.

IIRC there was a fair amount of that kind of stuff when New Orleans was devastated, to the point where they had troops who were patrolling the streets rather than helping the survivors. This could peel off into a long thread about how different societies lead to different behaviour in individuals but best not I think. Best to just say that the Japanese people as a group have done The Right Thing and should be congratulated for that.
