Surely it must break some kind of convention for signatures and hence be removed, even if by a mod?

Yup, use tapatalk! I did actually view this forum on my computer the other day and did notice it and thought "wow, that's a big sig", but it didn't particularly bother me as I have a big screen and a scroll wheel.
