When a company can't even afford to pay its employees, you know it's in big trouble.

Staff wages are invariably the last thing to go before any company has to give up and call it a day.

This is precisely the situation in which Swedish carmaker Saab finds itself, having already suspended production after failing to pay suppliers.

The reason could not be simpler - Saab does not sell enough cars

The 9000 Aero is still the best car they ever built. Snap one up if you ever find yourself in such a position.
I'm actually not surprised, sadly, that they're going.

They were making a big deal about their sales of fighter planes only a week or so ago.

Mind you, if the planes were nothing more than a Vauxhall Vectra in a new dress too they'd be dead and gone already.

The Saab that make planes and the Saab that makes cars are two seperate companies.

Hasn’t stopped them linking the two in adverts in the past.

Not at all (that's marketing folk for you). I do remember Top Gear asking a dealer about which bits of technology actually came from the planes side, and apparently it was the function that dipped the instrument controls when you altered the headlights, and that was it.

It was a tenuous link at best.

Good.

They didn't come with tyres anymore; Saab had started fitting them with sandals and Argyle-patterned socks.
