I'm with veato on this, although I wouldn't complain as i'd expect the food to be [LIFTED] from such an establishment anyway.

Yes i did mean cooking under a grill... but then that's what i'd consider grilling to me :?.

I think what you mean as a grill isn't its a salamander.

Well actually, it's the "Grill" setting in an Electric Oven, but it does essentially the same thing that does.

I also had to Wikipedia it to find out exactly what it was.

And also came across this:

Quote:
In the United Kingdom, Commonwealth countries (except Canada), and Ireland, grilling generally refers to cooking food directly under a source of direct, dry heat. The "grill" is usually a separate part of an oven where the food is inserted just under the element.[9] This practice is referred to as "broiling" in North America. In electric ovens, grilling may be accomplished by placing the food near the upper heating element, with the lower heating element off and the oven door partially open.

Source

Which is what i would usually refer to as "grilling".

After reading around and discussing with my dad about the subject, what JJ seems to refer to i.e. using a Flattop Grill/Griddle is what i'd personally refer to as "Pan Fried" since it seems like you can create the same effect with a frying pan. My example being what Americans refer to as "Potstickers" or JJ, what i guess is similar to japanese "Gyoza": clicky. I've seen them referred to as both "Grilled" Dumplings and "Pan-fried" Dumplings, but IMO i'd say the latter was more accurate.

But as always, this is just my subjective opinion.

I'd just like to say how proud I am of you guys for having a vehement argument about what constitutes grilling.

lmao.

+ And on another side note:

I think the reason why i'd use the term "Pan Fried" specfically is obviously the use of a frying pan... now this sounds obvious, however in Chinese culture we obviously use a Wok for practically everything and as such, to use a (relatively) large flat pan for frying it needs further clarification. I don't know whether or not that since a flat frying pan is "standard" in Western cooking that the terms are different?

Also JJ,

If i'm correct in assuming that the Flattop Griddle/Grill produces the same effect as pan-frying something, then would you call an egg cooked on it a "fried egg" or a "grilled/griddled egg"? And vice versa, i.e. saying "grilled sausages" for pan-fried sausages. Just curious since i'd define as two completely separate things (god knows what a grilled egg would be like though).

Tell her that if you wanted to cheat, the lipstick would've been on your cock, not your face?

+1

Just don't forget to kiss, (or at least shake hands) and make up when you're done arguing about grilling stuff.

Had a phone call at 08:45 asking if I want to attend an assessment day tomorrow. Brilliant, it would have been nice to be asked on Friday afternoon for a couple more days of preparation, especially as this one day I've had has mainly been stuck on a stuffy coach.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Why is the flex on an iron always 2" shorter than it needs to be, and why put a sensitive temperature dial in a position under the handle where it is most likely to be knocked?

Smashed one of our Beer Glasses last night... one of our oldest and most favourite/used :(.

Can't even get it replaced since it was when companies bothered engraving the logo, these days they just put a laminate sticker-type thing :(.
