Quote:
With the cost of filling a family car rising by almost a third in a year, many Britons have opted to ditch a vehicle rather than bear the cost, according to a YouGov survey of 2,000 adults.
Almost 20 per cent of all UK adults now say that public transport is their main way of getting around.
While most of the cars sold are second cars, one in fifty families has resorted to selling their only car. A similar number have moved their child to a school closer to home due to the cost of transport.
Four out of ten parents now say that they can no longer afford as many family days out to place such as theme parks and zoos because of the cost of travel.
It is not only the price of petrol that has increased over the last year. The cost of insuring a car in the UK averaged £1,100 in July, a significant rise on last year. With the average household now £11 a week worse off than a year ago due to rising in inflation, some families have had enough.

My cousin was close to selling his car because of the ridiculous cost of insurance. He is paying just under £500 fully comp in London and has never made a claim.

I hold a Full UK Licence but don't drive due to the exorbitant cost - mostly the insurance.

The bus service here is owned by the local authority - meaning it's cheap and very effective - I can get unlimited travel in the city for as a little as £2/day.

I also have a full driving license yet do not really need a car. There are buses and public transport if necessary. I can get all my food delivered. I get my milk delivered every other day and big grocery shops are done online, so have no real need for a car right now. Though I am considering joining a car club for the odd day when a car might be useful, though I can always hire one if necessary. Additionally it is impossible to park around here during the day and until I get a blue badge so I can actually find a car no point in actually getting one.

I once had to pay close to £3000 for one years' worth of insurance. It aint fun but thankfully I could afford it and then switch to an alternative company and pay £700.

I can't justify driving and I'm certainly glad it's not even a consideration :)

Yes but my cousin is taking early retirement next year so is hardly a boy racer. Yet still had silly quotes. His other pet peeve is the cost of a parking permit. Approaching £200 a year.

I have been paying nearly twice that TPFT for the past 2 years (with only a student loan or below minimum wage salary), I'm now paying about £750 fully comp, my only option in uni was a train that cost twice as much as driving and wasn't very reliable or regular (not to mention 2 miles from campus) or a bus that would stop at the same place and took even longer

If he is in London why not bike + public transport? If he was out in the sticks I could understand the frustration but with good, regular transport it's a little bit whiney tbh

He walks to work, and back. He only does a three day week as it is so no need for public transport or a bike. He uses the car at the weekend to visit people and in the evenings outside London.

Road tax can be very unfair on people who use a car rarely but want to keep one for recreation. However, the parking permit sounds perfectly reasonable (a garage would cost a hell of a lot more) and your friend should probably try getting a low-mileage insurance deal, especially if he has a "classic" car.

Two of my friends have recently given up their cars. One lives in London, and despite the excellent free parking he gets with his maisonette he just can't justify the tax, maintenance, MOT and insurance. The other lives in my village where many consider a car essential, but he simply couldn't afford to keep it on the road any more and feed his family. His wife was not impressed, but Sainsbury's on-line is keeping the baby's belly full.

I do not have a car but do not really need one. I can get order food online and get it delivered. Same for most items. I was considering joining a car club but do not need a car even that much. I do think that road tax should be very low to help low users and ensure that cars are registered.

Not really possible for us. We're a one car family as it is.

It's possible, just very difficult. For the first four years of my life, my mother managed to raise me single handed with a full time job and no car. We survived.

What is impossible is running a car when you can't afford it. It used to be most people that couldn't afford a car, then suddenly every other family on the street had about 5 of them. Now reality is starting to kick back in again - not everyone can live like f*cking royalty.

I'm having alternator hassles with my car.
I'm not if the bus service can get me to work early enough here.
I'll be discovering this tomorrow.

500? That isn't bad. I'm paying nearly that, living in the land.

In Munich, my old Mondeo cast around 1300 a year!
