I made the effort to look into public transport vs personal car costs a few months ago.

I own my car outright - no finance to pay.

Insurance, fuel, tax, annual service & MOT and an average of two new tyres per year = £1600

For the work commute alone, I'm looking at nearly £1200 for the bus, which takes a longer and slower route. Add to that the 3/4 mile walk each way, because of where the bus stops are in relation to my work place.

So, taking the bus timetable into consideration, I would have to leave home at 7:10 to get to work for 8am, and get home at 6.15pm. Compare that to 7:40am and 5.20pm for the car.

Now factor in trips out at weekends, for shopping & days out - say one saturday in two at £20 for a family pass.

I think I'll stick with the car. :|

My parents had two cars, the main (new) car and an older one that my dad uses to rack up the mileage for work. Due to insurance/tax/fuel rising costs he's ditched the older car now and just runs one.

I have a car and during the day it is sat doing nothing as I bus to work (approx £40ish a month I think). I still have to pay insurance/tax/MOT, etc but as I use less than a tank of fuel a month I can justify keeping it. I'd hate to try and get by without it tbh.

My cousin was close to selling his car because of the ridiculous cost of insurance. He is paying just under £500 fully comp in London and has never made a claim.

500? That isn't bad. I'm paying nearly that, living in the land.

In Munich, my old Mondeo cast around 1300 a year!

Yes but when you consider he has done less than 30000 miles in the ten years that he has had the car it adds up per mile.
