15/15

Passed it when I was 10 too. That kind of stuff was fairly simplistic even for me at that age. What used to drive me nuts was the non-verbal reasoning - it would always take me a tad longer than the other two sections which I would happily whizz through.

The single thing I recall about my 11+ (apart from the awesome feeling after completing it) was one question - how long was a bus. I had no frikkin clue and so made it up and wrote 10m.

15/15 - woot! - though I did use the full ten minutes. Last one also had me stumped, but then the penny dropped...

It was the last one that had me grasping for straws, and I guessed based on the second pattern I could see - thought it was a long shot but, as the answer I had was one of the choices, I went for it. Still not much more than a guess though.

Yeah, I understood the task I just couldn't figure out how the ecrytpion worked. It's obviously not a simple substitution cypher and I was having one of those 'maybe I'll see it if I stare at it really hard' kind of moments with it. That question seemed rather more challenging than any of the other ones in the test to be honest.

I think calling it a code was a little off-putting. You're only looking for repetition.

I know what you mean though - I spent a full minute or so staring at that one before it clicked.

Can't get 10 even when I've read the answer, it's just not making sense.

SPOILERS:

74 - 24 = 48. 48 - 1 = 47
28 - 9 = 19. 19 - 1 = 18
84 - 33 = 51. 51 - 1 = 50

Subtract one from the difference between the two numbers.

Ok so the arbitrary taking one off the result completely threw me, as I discounted subtraction after seeing the result was odd and the two numbers were even.
Probably suffered because I'm tired. still I'm off to grammar school (again)! :D 12/15

I got the same score I got when I sat it for real. 11 took more time than the rest for me.

14/15 as well.

Got the last one wrong since i misread it, although i wouldn't have gotten it either way after reading the answer.

I agree that it's less of a sequence and more just two interlaced ones and having to recognise it (i.e. you can't put it algebraically i believe - not if you're 11 at least).

It's a lot more simple than I think you are thinking.

Each digit 1 to 9 represents one letter. by looking at the first and last digits of each number and comparing with the first and last letters of the workds you can work out which three words are used. Then a little more interogation you can work out which word is which 4 digit number.

I just assumed that it was a simple number->letter substitution, then looked at where numbers where in the same place within each code and then compared it to work it out.

For example, i saw that "4" was both the 3rd number in "6245" and "1345". The only words which had the same 3rd letter were MAST and LEST, which meant "4" = "s".

From that there was only one set of numbers for Q7 which began with a "4" (for STEEL) and only one set of numbers which had a "4" as it's 3rd letter (for TASTE).

EDIT:

Question - Were you allowed to use pen and paper for this? Since i just did it all in my head 0.o

I used a pen and paper for the words bit just to make sure I had correctly worked it out. In the real deal, you could write on the paper. Think it's done electronically nowadays.

The sequences would have been interleaved and that's about as complex as it will get for a ten or eleven year old doing this. I still look for it automatically when looking a sequences before moving on to an algebraic method.

12/15, missed the code breaker and the final sequence.

15 / 15 - love those kind of quizzes.

I had to use a pen and paper for one of the sequence ones. I could have done it in my head but I only had 90 seconds left because the "code" one took me a minute or so; much quicker for me with a pen because my short term memory is so bad. I'd probably have been quicker when I was 10

15/15, but like others, I had a lucky guess on the last one. Easier number sequences I can do, but with those that require a little more thought I tend to be blind to the solution.

I will, however, point out that it is nearly 3 a.m. and I have not long got in from a 12 hour shift and am just winding down. I wouldn't say I am at my best.

14/15 for me, haven't done anything like this for a while.

I used the same process as above for the word ones too.
