TBH I think I understand the late thing. When I lived in hospital accommodation, I used to arrive late. This was mainly because you know it's close by. When I moved out to a flat 3 miles away, I used to get there around 30 mins early. Any later and there'd be no parking! When I recently had to commute to outside of Solihull, the surgery had eight parking spaces for something like 15-20 staff, so getting there early meant I bagged a space, even if it meant being 40 mins early. Sometimes this meant missing breakfast and having to buy lunch at the local supermarket. My current workplace is even further out in the sticks (no shops for something like 5-10 miles; people have to go to Solihull for anything they'd need!). This takes longer but because there's no shops and my workload is heavier, I have to eat breakfast, and I have to make a packed lunch. Consequently, I can run late by upto 15 mins so far!

How is it possible to be late every day when you sleep less than a hundred metres from your workplace?
Easily. I always am.

But I also work like a bastard once I'm in. And seldom ever leave on time. And regularly pull very late stays. The management know this - and I even forewarned them in my interview I wasn't a morning person. If you establish ground rules then there's no ambiguity.

As for your situation, I should like to echo every "STONE HIM!" comment. Only doubly-so. Burn him first even. This isn't school (although sometimes I wish the principles of school punishment applied in the workplace) - you're not grassing - you're doing your job. And it's not like he's your friend - but then even if he were - no "friend" would put you in such a position. So let him rot. You did what you could. And you will need to do it again.

You may, in time, even actually start to enjoy it. Not in a sadistic way mind, but I certainly get a glowing sense of "job well done" when I act as the eyes and ears of my directors - there are too many people out of work, who want work, who probably deserve work, to let procrastinating shirkers coast in this day and age. You have to earn your keep. Simple.

If he's not pulling his weight then screw it, you#d probably have gotten the blame somewhere down the line, so it's better to let the boss know now.

It's not a witch hunt mate. Not in my opinion anyway...

Hands up anyone who has never had to work with a complete prick who doesn't seem capable of getting sacked, regardless of how bad they are at their job, and how much they piss everyone else off.

Nobody? Really? I am surprised. </obvious sarcasm>

You've never worked with a complete cock who was useless at his/her job and was only any good at pissing other people off? You, young sir, are a very lucky man. :D

This guy was late every day, every trip. Often by five to ten minutes, sometimes by over an hour. He refused to try to catch and describe over three samples an hour. Most people could manage five. When we were busy he'd still take an hour and twenty for lunch even though everyone else could manage with half an hour. If there was a computer bug, he'd just leave it for the guy on the next shift to fix. Etc etc etc. Nobody liked working with him.

Oh, and there was no banter at all.

Ah yes! I remember that name!

Are you on OnLive yet? If not, why not? :D

It's free to sign up and your first game is only £1 (if you want to get one at all).

Give it a try! It's awesome! Even my crappy internet can play it and at the moment I'm getting less than 1M!

You were in a position of responsibility for ensuring this person completed a piece of work, he didn't, you work for the company and it is your responsibility to see that he pulls his weight. If he doesn't, you have to report it.

Giving honest reports is the way to go. You had given him more than enough chances, going by what you have said. If you had told him he had to have the report finished by the end of the week and he hadn't accomplished it, heck, hadn't even picked up the basics, then you need to let your superior know. If he / everybody carried on like that, the company wouldn't be there in a few months!

Don't feel bad.

People like that are one of the reasons I can't get engineering work and have to get a cleaning job.

Well, he's gone.

He's just collected his things and gone.

It's a shame to see that happen to anyone but I can't say I'm that surprised.
