A scenario that happened today.
Quote:
You're queued in a small supermarket (six aisles, three tills). The guy in front of you has emptied his trolley. You have a trolley of goods and are waiting behind him. The next till has two people in a similar situation.

An elderly (at least 60s) Afro-Carribean lady has three items in her hand and asks whether she could cut in front of you. Do you let her?

========================================================================

What happened: the above scenario but I was with my mother and sister. She appears to have very few items and although there are self-checkout tills, there are queues for them too. I let the lady cut in. My sister was on the phone to a friend but started complaining about how she hates it when people cut in, when old people use it as an excuse. The lady even offered to move back out. Spoke to my sister but she's adamant she wouldn't let someone cut in irrespective of their situation. Just wondering whether things have changed in modern times. Sister is only two years younger than me but has a completely different attitude and outlook on life.

Just three. I probably would.
A full basket, no.

If it was a small basket of things, sure, go right ahead.

I was at the supermarket today and a girl joined the queue behind me with only a box of eggs in her hand.

I said she could push in front of me.

I have also asked if I can push in in the past (only when I have one or two items though).

I'd have let her in.

100% every time, let them in, it's just more efficient, I would pick things up, offer to carry stuff, re-arrange messy displays while I wait etc etc. If you go in with the idea that you need it to be quick then you always come out frustrated or angry.

FWIW, I've never asked to push in. I've always been one to remain quiet and queue. Sometimes people might let me through, sometimes not. But I don't expect to have anybody to do anything.

Where would you draw the line? Five items? Ten? A basketful. I think it was about five items or fewer, I'd be happy to let them through.

My sister can spin a trip to Sainsbury's that would normally take me 30 minutes into a 4 hour epic.

Was she pretty?!!
;)

2 or 3 items, yes I'd let them in if I had a trolley full - others have done the same for me so what goes around comes around, that's the way I see it anyway. Course, if she was a pretty 21 year old, the answer's always "yes"!

I'll be the miserable tw@t then... no, I would not let her in.

I have clocked someone with a basket, with only a couple of items, and I have waved them through. If someone asks to cut in, I will refuse; and have in the past. You're going shopping - expect queues, and plan accordingly.

It's the same kind of crap at the airport, with people hustling and pushing to get to the baggage carousel. After a four hour flight, just how much of a frikkin rush do you have to be in to abandon any sense of decency to save five frikkin minutes?

I've one sister who can do this. My mother can be as bad if she's not in a rush. My other sister and I both prefer to get the shopping done ASAP - we've often thought about what to buy before we get to the supermarket.

Hypothetical, but let her in out of my own embarrassment, and I shop online anyway. Now that is planning ahead ;)

As stated, there were self-checkout tills but there were queues for those. Small supermarket with three normal checkout tills only.

^This

Plus, just to wind my sister up, I'd let the next 3 people go before me.
