While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Apple have posted a Maps App banner in their App Store home page. Tapping it links to a selection of apps on the store, mostly those mentioned in the letter.

Mobile data management company Snappli, which helps people stay within their limits by compressing data and video, pulled the numbers from its iOS 6-toting users in the United States and the UK.
The company claims that 25 per cent of its users were using Google Maps on a daily basis before the switch to iOS 6.
Shortly after installing the new update, 35 per cent of the 5,000 users with iOS 6 were giving Apple Maps a try each day.
In the ensuing days, that number dropped to just four per cent, meaning only 1-in-25 iOS 6 users (that also use Snappli) are currently persevering with the service.

Hardly surprising, really. Another feature that is just wrong with I is the colour scheme. Certainly, if you are used to road atlases, you will recognise the different classes of roads from the colours. The Google based version of the app retained that colour scheme. The new version does not.

For what it's worth - the satellite images for where I am have improved a lot. Still problems with data (place names, etc.) though.

The satellite images for my areas still look like a very cloudy day.

The thing I like a lot about Google's offering is the colour scheme. It looms like a road atlas, so you know instantly what the roads are. Apple's maps app just does not do this, and so from a glance it's harder to determine what you are looking at. Really, they should be following common conventions.

Personally, they could do really well if they provided varying skins or colour schemes so that their maps appear familiar to ramblers, walkers, motorists, etc..

In other news - they have updated their imagery for my area. My current car is in the drive, not the previous one :-)

Since my last comment the satellite maps are now clear so that you can see the buildings and so identify buildings around my location. The numbers of stores shown seems to have increased and it is easier to report problems, or at least I have learned how to move the pins. It is definitely getting there.

The building wot I am sitting in right now appears to have been added, as do 2 of the other 3 buildings in this estate-thing. In fact they're using the self-same imagery as Google. Bing has the most up-to-date mapping.
