My lil sis had a dell inspiron 1500 or something a few years back. It developed a known problem with the DC jack and despite my best attempts, I was unable to repair it. She then inherited a friend's old junk laptop which she used until that packed up. She doesn't do much beyond surfing, email, research and running ssps software. Would also use it for music but she has a separate blu-ray player and TV for films which we bought her last year for birthday and xmas presents. I was thinking of a 15.6" i5 laptop but no ideas about suitable resolutions at this size, nor system requirements - she would be running windows 7. I was looking at spending around £400 and this caught my eye: clicky. Unfortunately, it's not available at the moment. Other recommendations would be welcome.

You'd be utterly surprised at some of the deals Argos and Tesco have been knocking out recently, it's totally random but take a look...

I wasn't even going to touch Argos since they normally charge so much for stuff that's cheaper elsewhere. Amazon and Argos had the same laptop for £430 but Amazon was out of stock (and later revised the offer to £480 + Windows 8). This is what I bought: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/p ... nformationCame with a free laptop bag and mouse.

That Samsung and very similar models have been on sale absolutely everywhere.
I recently recommended one that was on offer at Dabs to a friend, and my mum just bought one in a French supermarket for €200 with €100 cash back!

Yeah I know - i3 and i5 models (otherwise same spec) have been flogged everywhere. The i3 seems to go for around £300 whilst i5 is around £450 or so. Didn't want to get her anything underpowered.

I wouldn't call an i3 under powered. Not for that sort of work anyway.

Agreed, most of our customers are still buying Celeron or Pentium D based notebooks and desktops for employees!

You can still buy Pentium D stuff? But that's circa 2005.

No. You can still get "Pentium Dual Core" branded machines, but they are based on newer sandy and ivy bridge architectures; as are the newer celerons.

Ah, I thought you meant the actual Pentium D. The newer branded Pentiums are a much newer revision. They should be fine for every day office work, browsing etc.

That's fine. The only thing I don't like about 15.6" laptops os th elow screen resolution. It seems you have to pay a lot more to get a bigger/better screen.

Mine is only 14" but has a resolution of 1600 x 900. Yes I paid a lot more for it, and I still wish it had more pixels.
