Daily Mash article. I didn't notice at first, but raised an eyebrow when I read it:

Quote:
“For instance these ‘turkey burgers’ are mostly apple, while this ‘apple’ is actually a dolphin’s pancreas.

“All the best.”

Meanwhile, frozen food giant Findus confirmed that its vegetarian lasagne is 100% meat.

The company said the ready meal, part of its ‘Very Very Vegetably’ range, has been withdrawn from sale so that some tomatoes and onions can be added to it.

A spokesman said: “They won’t go back on sale until we have brought the meat content down to less than 50%.

It was obviously a made up story, because I know that the vegi lasagne is actually made of mud and straw.

This is an embarrassment to all concerned. Though I am struggling to remember when I had something made by Findus apart from possibly Fish pie or fish fingers? The failure to trace is the major problem. I might consider horse burgers, they will be leaner than beef burgers. Great for comedians though.

100% Sea horse apparently.

I don't mind - I'd always assumed they were made out of ground up cow testicles. Horse meat is an improvement.

I bought some frozen tiger prawn shapes from Asda recently they were actually reshaped and dyed processed white fish meat. I still bought them to try. Labelling is not the problem, and with so many French people moving here, that horse meat might appear in the chiller cabinets all perfectly legitimately before long.

According to the Daily Telegraph the boss of Findus is a polo player, so clearly we know now where his failed polo ponies go. ;)

Makes me glad that we make everything fresh. We buy all the meat locally and cook ourselves. I can't remember the last time I ate a fozen meal, I think probably a Borderlaise in 2006.

I am gradually switching to doing the same. The problem for me is doing it in a way that avoids hobs and ovens. Though some dishes are probably a little beyond many peoples abilities or time constraints.

It's amazing what you can create just using a mixer and a microwave. Does your microwave also have a grill or oven setting? If so, there's very little you can't cook perfectly deliciously. If not, it's worth thinking about an upgrade. Especially for meat and melted cheese, it's so much nicer when it's browned on top.

I actually have two combination microwaves, both with grills and convection ovens. I do my soups in the microwave and blend them with the Kenwood. So can do more than I used to. As for having two microwaves, I struggle to remember to switch dishes and then get one dish cold when the other is hot. By heating them together I get both dishes done at the same time.

Findus knew for a week before it told the FSA

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21391891

I'd like to think that would put them out of business in the UK one way or another, but probably not...

Well they may have know but possibly not the extent. Though knowing how companies deal with bad news they might have thought that the best way to get through the crisis was keep their heads down and let the stocks get consumed before any attention is drawn to them. They would have been discussing this with their PR advisors.

I hope this finally puts to rest the whole ridiculous notion of industries regulating themselves and "light touch" regulation.

The Food Standards Agency and Trading Standards departments need to resume being much more pro-active about random inspections and testing, rather than relying on internal company records and audits.

There were TSOs who were always sceptical about "light touch" regulation and self-policing industries, and I hope that these incidents and incidents in other sectors - such as the banking crisis - demonstrate they were right to be sceptical. Let's hope the government now rid of these bollocks policies.
