One advantage of a great wide screen is I can have a side bar without loosing too much desktop.

I've tried various ones. I'm now using the Google one again, because I like the way it synchronises between all my PCs and laptops. I really rather like my gadgets, although I can easily live without them.

My personal gripe with the Google one is that it's just so bloated. It's using 120MB and has generated over 20,000,000 page faults. That's even worse than VMware, my other favourite tool I don't like :?

So, do you use a sidebar? If so, what are your favourite gadgets and widgets? Anything you hate about them?

Minimalist/Resource junkie here..

I have two icons on my desktop - recycle bin and a shortcut to my server.

Three icons visible in my quick-launch.

I used to use the Windows one (Vista) until it stopped working ("Sidebar has encountered a problem and needs to close...blargh").

I tried the Google one, but I dislike Google Desktop because I notice the slow down on the PC.

They take up too much screen space (even on widescreen or dual head) and are distracting. I tried them, but I don't generally like them.

I used Superkaramba for a while (Linux KDE based one, even wrote my own widgets for it, but I only used it for a month or so (in 2005/2006 ISTR).

But I tend to have browsers and Twitter / chat windows on the right and e-mail bottom left, media top left and productivity apps left (overlaying media and e-mail) most of the time.

Well, on my Mac I have the dock visible at the bottom of the screen with my most frequently used apps in it and Drag Thing hidden on the left hand side of the screen for everything else. I do have a few Widgets open in dashboard but they aren't visible until I go into dashboard so the actual desktop is pretty clear all the time.

I have no idea what these 'sidebar' things are that you are all talking about.

Mark, they're an area on the side of the screen to store widgets. Quite like dashboard except it forms part of the desktop permanantly rather than overlaying just when you need.

Really? Ha, I don't even use widgets (apart from on the iPhone, are they actually widgets?).
I guess pie was the right option for me then.

None here.
I use a 4:3 ratio screen, and that's just the way I like it.

I, like a few others have voted Pie since I thought a sidebar was what happened in a courtroom with a Judge!!

Now I have read the coments I know what one is, but considering I have all my desktops set to hide even the regular icons, I can't imagine my OCD need for things to be clear would allow me to have one, regardless of who made it :D

I tried the Vista one for about a week but didn't like it, as it was two obstructive, even on a dual 22" setup, so now I don't use them.
