A teaspoon (standard measure to make one cup) of ground coffee is roughly 5g and you get decent coffee in 225g bags for about 4 quid, meaning a standard cup of coffee made in a filter machine probably costs between 10 and 11 pence, once you've factored in water, electricity and disposable filter paper. Say 15p if you add a lot of milk.

Those 'pod' machines - of whichever brand - are easily the most expensive way to make coffee at home. It's not as if making coffee is particularly complicated or time consuming. Only a sensible option if you only ever make one cup at a time.

Actually you can also get those cone filter get ups, and could use your ground coffee in those just as easily. Plus you can put the filter and used coffee into the compost. The problem with pod machines is that you are paying over the top for individually packaged coffee. Then there are smaller coffee plungers for one or two cups. Then you risk being stuck with a pod machine but no source of coffee pods to use with it.

Ocado/Waitrose

Just to clarify, Ocado and Waitrose are separate companies, with Waitrose having their own online shop. Waitrose is a supplier to Ocado, and not too much more these days.

Am I right in thinking that all the people debating the merits of saving 7 pence on a cup of coffee own iPads and / or Macs?

Is that why you are all so poor?

Just preparing my next mega shop on mysupermarket.co.uk and Asda totals £118 and the next cheapest was Tesco at £140. Waitrose are more expensive still.
