Talking about UFO's means they're not talking about the secrect military projects that they really are.

I actually think that the US military prefer the idea of UFO's rather than admit what they are working on. It suits them so any civilian seeing some prototype can be convinced it is a UFO and not the latest stealth aircraft or drone. It makes keeping secrets easier.

I wish people would say "alien flying saucer" or whatever, instead of UFO. I see UFOs all the time, because I'm not very skilled at bird watching or plane spotting.

Yes but most UFO sightings can be explained in terms of weather phenomena or weather balloons etc. It is an all encompassing term until something has been identified. It might not be saucer shaped either. This would also include optical effects that might explain many super fast objects.

Because of the association with the nuts'n'bolts theories about UFOs, the preferred term these days is 'UAP' - Unidentified Aerial Phenomena.

Yes a better term. It also covers weather and balloons. Though I still think that any identification of spy programs were hidden this way so suited the military then. Hollywood only encouraged the idea with films like Plan Nine from outer space.
