Isn't an 'inert bomb' just a term for a bomb shaped piece of scrap iron? If so it's hardly a threat to the ecosystem.

I partially agree. It depends on how much damage it does on the way down (how much energy it is carrying when / if it hits the coral). Once it is there, it should eventually become part of the reef, assuming that it doesn't have any toxic materials (paint etc.) that could dissolve over time.

If it is inert land with it and recycle it. All they have done is litter the reef. Though a 500lb dead weight being dropped at 500mph from a great height will have incredible amount of kinetic energy which while definitely shatter a large area of coral, then the shock wave will kill fish even if it does not explode. It also depends what chemistry was in the bomb, or whether it was literally just a lump of iron. One report describes them as simply unarmed bombs - clicky - which means there will be chemistry in there that's probably going to kill some wildlife.

But the news report said they dropped it away from the coral, so no damage done.
