When I was a programmer it was quite common to have 3 pints, sometimes more, during our lunch hour, then go back to work. I can honestly say that I wrote some of my best code when half cut ;)

Years ago I had a lunch with a friend who was a money broker and had a spectacular expense account. So we went for a drink in City winebar. Three of us drinking solidly. Three bottles of port between us and we all staggered back to work. I was so hammered I returned to the office late and really was incapable of work that afternoon. Fortunately the only director in the office that day thought it all highly amusing.

Back in the bad ol' days, when my parents were still kids, there would be a bar in the hospital and it wasn't uncommon for doctors to go for a drink after ward round or at lunch time.

End of project, customer treated us to pub lunch, 3 pints, then back to the office, my boss had to talk to the Manager for another couple of hours, before we drove home. Nothing to do, so I sat myself in the corner at an HP125 CP/M machine and wrote a version of breakout to keep me amused. Writing the program was more fun than playing - I was never any good at breakout!

Years ago my uncle was having a tracheotomy and he was asked if he liked Guinness he said no. So he got Champagne on the NHS. My aunt used to take in an ice bucket every day and his wardrobe in his room had three drink optics in and was a regular stop off for the doctors on their rounds.

When I worked in France I got so drunk at lunchtime I had to stay in the office until about 7 to sober up before driving home.

That the New York mob owned a lot of gay bars from the 70s onwards. I'm under no illusions about them making money where and when they could, but I'd also assume it was a fantastic way to blackmail people.

This seems like a genius way of getting more hours out of your staff.

ION, I learnt I'm just about able to function after staying out drinking with a hot red head and her glaswegian friends until 1.30-2.00am.
Women lead me astray.

Only if they were hiding the fact. ;)

I was going to post in this thread and that picture distracted me so much I closed the tab before I posted.

Anyway:

Nekrolog is obituary in many other languages. What a cool and precise word.
