I fear it is a genuine policy. Lets make it mandatory that all offspring of politicians are sent to war zones.

I can see it now, a bunch of ConDems trying to think of a way to tackle the incredibly high unemployment rate of the 18-25 crowd.
Let me guess, they'll get paid an "enhanced" Jobseekers Allowance and shipped off to Afghanistan?

This totally about lowering youth unemployment, though it will probably be extended to everyone out of work after 26. The only get out will be retirement.

It taught the kids here discipline and respect for authority. Everybody had to that or a year of social service, such as ambulance service, working as a porter in a hospital etc. But they have just scrapped it.
That said, those on national service could not be sent to active combat zones.

If this is real I'm surprised it's not on the BBC's news site. Something this dramatic should make headlines.

If this was some way that would do the whole nation some good you could kind of understand. But it's this government's idea, so it won't be. It'll be used like the laughable 'workfair' scheme, as a way to save corporation profits at the public cost.

So a years national service stacking shelves in Tesco? That is not going to be popular with a lot of people.

Yawn Everyone relax and wind their neck in. - It's a Private Members Bill, i.e. it's pretty much guaranteed to not become law
- It has only had its First Reading i.e. the title has been read out and an order has been given for it to be printed
- It has not even been debated yet
- If it were to be debated it would be roundly defeated even just by backbenchers
- It would require money - so it would be solidly opposed by both frontbenches
- Normally MPs are rather promiscuous in what they attach their names to. It's only got two MP's names on the cover - so it's as popular as a fart in a spacesuit
- It's a National Service Bill, not a National Military Service Bill
- Nowhere in the bill is there any mention of compulsory military service
- Nowhere in the bill is there any mention of any military service - only "work connected with ... the Armed Forces."
- Possible types of service under this bill include many activities that young people do in gap years anyway e.g.
- charitable work,
- social action,
- care for the elderly or disabled,
- overseas development activity
- They would be paid to do it
- This Bill is by Phillip Hollobone - the same guy who proposed the bringing back of Capital punishment and the renaming of the August Bank Holiday as "Margaret Thatcher Day"
- On the same day as he sought permission for a second reading for this, he also sought permission for the equally wacky Face Coverings (Prohibition) Bill and European Communities Act 1972 (Repeal) Bill
- In 2010, he refused to meet constituents who wear a veil - which is a bloody cheek given that he looks like this:

Well said Jim.
I actually think there are some merits to the scheme, but it ain't gonna happen any time soon.

There are not many. All it will do is make loads of low paid people unemployed as they are replaced by these national service people. Then what would those doing community service do instead? It would also be very disruptive to those on apprenticeships, do they do their national service before during or after they completed their apprenticeship? Would this mean that those who qualify as a doctor be forced to do a years work on minimum wage on national service? What about the interest accrued on their student debt? What to do about those that get out of it? Fines prison or off to a war zone? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
