I recall reading some years ago that their primary source of income is a fund that was set up to ensure that there was always a left-wing broadsheet in circulation.

I like the Guardian. I find a lot of the reviews and contributors really smart and funny (Charlie Brooker and Jay Rayner for example) and regularly buy the Sunday version. The articles have the advantage of being slightly less biased than the Indy. *takes her middle class problems out*

That reminds me of a joke Three honeymooning couples find themselves in adjacent rooms in a hotel. As they are getting undressed, the first man says to his wife, "What huge buttocks!" Much offended, she threw him into the corridor. The second man, also undressing, says to his wife, "Christ! What huge breasts!" She is also greatly offended and throws him out into the corridor. Several minutes later, the third newlywed husband arrives in the corridor as well. The other two ask, "What happened? Did you put your foot in it?" "No, but I could have!" the third man replied.

Italo Calvino and his book "If on a winter's night a traveller" which I have just finished reading. I have never read a book like it, I feel vaguely resentful while at the same time conceding that it forced me to the very end of it, no matter how many times I lost interest or lost focus or lost my sanity in the middle.
