I am currently "forcing" myself to watch films in the IMDB Top 250 that I haven't watched.. by forcing I mean I have long since seen all the easily-accessible, instantly entertaining films, and now I'm watching the slow, difficult films that border on being boring for the first 20 minutes until you get in to the characters.

Well, I've watched two such films so far, and I certainly haven't been disappointed. Two very good (if sad) films:

Grave of the Fireflies 9/10 (one of the few Ghibli films I never got round to watching, tried to twice but wasn't in the right mood, worth persevering)

Life is Beautiful 7/10

I saw Life Is Beautiful not that long ago and it was a lovely film. Very sad though. It does make you reflect on your own life and reaslise how lucky we are.

I'll add the other one to my watch list.

I would say Grave of the Fireflies is one of those films that can re-align your perspective, make you re-think elements of your life, as the best Ghibli films all do. A commentary on modern day Japan, a commentary on how people treat others and especially children. It is one of the most relentlessly sad films I have ever seen, and yet still contains scenes evoking childish wonderment and joy, what a genius Miyazaki is.

Bridesmaids

Apart from a couple of sequences (food poisoning and the flight to Vegas) I thought this was a very dull and disappointing movie. The preview looked good but there are so many long dull bits and a load of unsympathetic characters. Even my other half - who thought it was OK - started wondering how long the film had left to go....not a good sign.

3 out of 10.

I tried watching it, it's basically stuff women find outrageous that blokes have seen a million times before. It's a tipping point for the mainstream to my mind and so it's overrated because female characters are often one-note, unfortunately.

The Fifth Estate. 5/10 all just very dull, ultimately not enough material for a feature film I suspect.

I watched at the weekend as well. Yeah, the odd funny bit but certainly not in the same league as The Hangover for example (not even one of the squeals).

Stephen King's The Mist is really rather good.

No it's not.
It's not in the same league.
It's better.

Bridesmaids is a great film.
The Hangover is not.

Knights Of Baddassdom.
Great cast, should have been better, but just don't bother.
