Marvel Now! reboot, part 2

To tie in with Marvel's reboot of many of its lines some interesting developments were made in The Amazing Spider Man. In issue 700, Spider Man (aka Peter Parker) confronted a dying Doctor Octopus. At the point of death, Doc Ock showed he had one last card to play by swapping his mind with Parker and leaving him to 'die' trapped in Doc Ock's body while taking over the body of Spider Man. In his last moments, Parker convinced Ock to become a hero instead of following his usual path.

Relaunched as The Superior Spider Man, the story followed Doc Ock's attempts to be a superior version of Spider Man. Employing a wealth of high-tech gadgetry and a much more aggressive approach to dealing with criminals (including killing them), he soon establishes himself. However, colleagues from both the police and The Avengers start to suspect that something's not quite right with the web-slinger. And could that be the faintest glimmerings of Peter Parker's consciousness lurking in Otto Octavius's mind?

Perhaps Marvel's most well-known character, any kind of major change was always going to be controversial and killing off Peter Parker was certainly that. Although I probably haven't bought a Spider Man comic in 20 years I was quite surprised by this turn of events. However the writing and art were enough to win me (and many other readers) over.

The storylines that followed were inventive without straying too far from the established style. As with The Hulk, The Superior Spider Man has now been re-rebooted as The Amazing Spider Man, starting from No. 1 once again. I don't want to say too much more in case anyone out there might pick up this series in a Trade Paperback, but I'd say it's well worth a look, particularly for the artwork. It's one of the few Marvel comics I'll stick with for a while.

Some of the newer Spidey comics have came my way but I've no idea which ones, and feck knows when I'll get to read them. It could all get a bit confusing - it seems Spidey gets rebooted in some fashion at least every two years now

I wish to hell the companies would get back to more standalone story arcs with someone checking continuity as they go along or whatever; you know, you might just be able to hang on to your readership and not have to reboot all the time if you'd focus!

I hate that so many really good, just starting out authors' comics are black and white - it's immediately annoying visually-speaking, detail gets totally lost or confused, and as a result they can take ages to read. Probably hurts sales too :(

Do you dislike 'old' films and films with subtitles too?

Mark

Old, scratchy black and white films I'm not keen on, but that's as much to do with the films themselves as how and when they were made. Something more contemporary I've no problem with (The General I loved, documentaries etc).

Subtitles aren't a problem either.

Totally different medium, dude ;)

See, that looks great, but that's got more to do with it's simplicity and the fact Mr Capullo drew it! I didn't even notice the Joker for ages

Learned that not only did the Beeb make Batman and Superman radio serials (Batman Knightfall was on Radio1!), but that there's still podcast serials on the go from an independent outfit. Here. We. Go...
