I don't want to hijack the thread, but if you're making enough to stay afloat, isn't being happy with what you're doing the most important aspect of any job? Also, Heather's back! Yaaaaay!

I've never really gone away. It's just I don't have the excuse to spend all day playing on the pooter and wasting time on the interwebs any more! I ought to clarify my position a little. Yes, I'm making a little money, but I wouldn't really be able to survive on it if it wasn't for the fact Best Beloved is behind the scenes paying for most of the household bills! Either way, it can be an interesting, sometimes fulfilling and frustrating, and very often varied way to make some kind of a living.

Professional Software Engineer retired Software and hardware engineer though mostly nothing nowadays. I had a nasty accident at home and while not a cripple, life can be very painful, so I sit and critisize everyone else.

Graphic Designer. I worked in advertising and corporate design for 18 years - mainly blue chip B2B and the financial sector (pre-crash). Then I was made redundant in 2013, I spent a good few months applying for "Designer" jobs when what they actually wanted was "Web Programmer / UI / UX / Developer... oh and a bit of a designer". Sole-destroying time.
Eventually I found a job later that year which took me in a slightly different direction, still a graphic designer, but now in the promotional merchandise sector. Basically, anything that is branded - from a pen, corporate clothing, bespoke products manufactured in the far east, and everything in between.
Far more varied than my previously agency role, every day is different and I'm working on the likes on Bentley, Jaguar Land Rover, Disney, Sainsburys, Nike and JD Sports to name just a few. While it does have its stressful moments, generally I'm enjoying it more than the agency job. Been here 4 years, so maybe time to start looking around? Can't see me returning to a design agency job though, things have moved on too much, it's all web and social media these days - although I do some web stuff, my strength is design rather than coding.

IT Technical Specialist for the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) although based in Nottingham rather than the head office in Swindon.
I'm mainly involved in SQL, SharePoint, VMWare, Veeam and F5 Big-IP plus all the underlying stuff - windows server, IIS, etc etc. "Infrastructure" seems to be the single descriptive word regarding what I do.
