I have to say though, the talk of Gibson's film got me to download the original series (I'll eventually get round to watching it)...

lol, I actually do like some Bollywood stuff. I like the ones that retell traditional stories, rather than the Hollywod remake remakes. The thing is, they churn out about 9000 crap films for every good one. Also, I can never remember what they're called!

As to cartoons, DBZ is a kids' show. There are very much more "grown up" cartoons, but frankly I don't see what's wrong with watching kids' shows. I enjoy Danger mouse, South Park, Top Cat, Shrek, Monsters inc. and a whole host of other western "kids shows" as well as a lot of animé. Frankly, they're produced to a far higher standard than 99% of the rubbish "grown men" watch on the TV.

What I really hate is sport. In particular, the way it suddenly takes over the entire schedule. It's not uncommon to have Tennis shown on all 4 channels during Wimbledon, and what's the point anyway? If you like sport, then go outside and bloody play it! Watching it on the box just seems retarded

Campbell did a superb job with "reboots" for both recent Bonds. I see no reason why this should be any different.

There's no better combo than excellent reboot director, who also happens to pick his projects very carefully, has stacks of TV experience AND directed the original show. I'm looking forward it.

That said, I've not seen the original show, so maybe it's one of those generational things? Like when "older" friends of mine occasionally recognise riffs or samples in the house and hip-hop I like and say "What's that?! The original's way better!!"

I thought he did Casino Royale but not Quantum of Solace? Did a good job with that though, fair enough.


It's possibly something of the old fogey but it's also simple logistics - Edge of Darkness the TV series is six hours long and there's not a lot of empty space in it. I really don't see how they can make it a two hour movie other than throwing huge chunks of it away and thus making it a rather confused mess. I'll wait for the reviews, personally.

I was referring to both Brosnan and Craig. He also directed Goldeneye after Bond had been absent for 7yrs. Re-watch it - it's superb.



Fair point Jon, and if I was partial to the source material I'd probably be in your boat. My point was, I can't think of a better guy to trust it to, so I'm keeping an open mind.

Downey Jr will be superb. I'm fairly sure you can quote me at this point.

I have no problem with Downey Jr specifically. I think his Tony Stark was nearly note-perfect and I loved him as Chaplin. However Holmes as a character loathed violence - although I could never figure out whether he considered it beneath him or just very inefficient - so I doubt he would have indulged in bare fist boxing and I don't remember any of the stories being that full of explosions. Whoever did this either hasn't heard of Holmes before and assumed he was just some sort of antideluvian James Bond - "well, he's English, isn't he?" - or had a ready made story about an Victorian adventurer and is just hanging Holmes's name on it for a bit of extra cache'. Oh and threw in a bit of hollywood starlet in some stockings just in case.

Either way it looks like they've taken the name of Sherlock Holmes and pinned it to a film more or less laser targeted at 13 year old boys who think FHM is the height of sophistication. And that is wrong on so many levels i can barely count them. The fact Guy Ritchie, despite being British and hopefully realising what a hatchet job this is, decided to carry on with it just confirms to me he's the talentless chancer I always suspected he was.
