As I posted elsewhere; most people put themselves first, family second, nation third, race a distant fourth and couldn't care less if the rest of the planet went to hell.

For some people, "Saving the world" means "Ensuring America has all the oil". Closer to home, it might mean "Ensuring I can drive my kids to school in a Range rover".

Unfortunately, we live in a world were greed is rewarded and the innocent suffer. Outside of Star Trek, I've not seen any evidence of the meek inheriting the Earth.

Perhaps we need a ruthless eugenics program to eliminate all the people I don't like for ever more. That sounds fair to me.

We are pretty much at the top of the food chain, as a species. We have adapted to survive in almost every climate and make use of the resources we find therein.
Where we struggle, I'd suggest we do so as a result of our own actions, never because of predation, and rarely because of a natural disaster.
The Bad Stuff that affects most of humanity is a result of our own doing, but the inescapable reality is that as a species, we're thriving.
Do we occupy a comfortable niche? I'd say so.
